In a Nutshell.
Martin Ferrabee:
Although originally a painter by preference I developed an interest in sculpture whilst at Jacob Kramer College of Art. In Leeds and took this further during degree and post graduate study at St Martin’s, London. This led me to work in forged steel and inclusion in a nationwide touring show of sculpture work called “Have you seen Sculpture from the Body?” starting at the Tate Britain and then moving north to Cambridge, Bradford and Castle Howard. At this time I also worked in stone and carved a large marble piece based on the figure which is on display in Marusici, Croatia following the Kornarija International Symposium of sculpture.
I went on to make smaller sculptures in wax and bronze and continued to work directly from the figure in both drawing and sculpture and showed works on a regular basis.
In the late 1990’s I moved back to observational drawings and paintings directly from natural forms making large magnified images in colour with a theme of finding Beauty in unexpected places.
I had commercial clients buying for hotels, restaurants and offices and a large number of domestic buyers.
In 1999 Sir Terence Conran commissioned me to do six pastel drawings of fish for permanent display in his Great Eastern Hotel, Liverpool Street.
My more recent work in pastels and acrylics has continued this theme of enlarged natural forms. Other work has developed more narrative ideas using puppets and masks as a starting point for imagined events and stories as well as to illustrate poetry.
Smaller studies in watercolour and pen reflect a continued interest in historical artefacts, architecture and landscape. I also work as an illustrator with particular interest in the work of Leonard Cohen using digital photomontage to accompany scholarly articles by David Peloquin an American academic writer and also create short videos and animated films.
More recently I have developed a large installation piece using skills ,interests and processes from my other work, based on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. This is a large constructed landscape with photomontage backdrops and imagined narrative events, this time reducing rather than enlarging the scale but retaining a sense of the Beauty and diversity of our environment.
This process is documented with photography, video, drawing and painting and we are in the process of producing a documentary film about my life and how I came to build “Ghumjeeling” with an Indian film maker Anirban Dutta due for release in 2021.
